Lesson 3 - Music Video (21/09/16)

Music Production - Purpose, Promotion & controversy
Music videos are a promotion tool for different things such as artist, single etc... and how can they be promoted. Or are they promoting an album or a music video.

How else might a music video promote a song/album/artist?    .....CONTROVERSY!!

What is controversy?
Something that causes conflict between different people in society.

Record company: higher single or album sales = more profit
Artist: More fame = more money(sponsorships, sales, records/albums)

Artists may make videos and songs about their dark issues to raise the listeners awareness and get them thinking about

Controversial Videos:
Bring Me The Horizon - Go To Hell, For Heaven's Sake
There are loads of references to christianity, such as the cross in the snow and a cross on a shop/building saying Jesus saves, a cross figure that goes on a chain and also the most controversial, the burning cross.

The song is about someone who has betrayed Oli Sykes (the screamer) and he is just saying how he feels; how much no one wants to hear them and no one wants to see them and how he wished they'd go to hell.

It is controversial because the band are criticising christianity and how they think christianity is something people believe in because they don't want to do things for themselves. Some christians or catholics can be offended by the video which shows them in a church and multiple skulls and their lyrics say the opposite thing.

The song was recorded in a church yet Oli Sykes is screaming about someone being so desperate and pathetic and they should go to hell for heaven's sake.

Lots of criticism from fans about recording music videos in a church when the band doesn't believe in God or christianity.

Lesson 2 - Music Video (15/09/16)

The Progression Of Music Videos
Ben Bernie - Sweet Georgia Brown (1920)
The video was filmed in black and white but with only a single shot; long shot, so that they could see the whole band/orchestra.

Bessie Smith - St. Louis (1929)
Still black and white however there are 2 different shot types: long med

Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock (1950)
Still in black and white, with lots of different angle shots: long shot, medium shot, eye level, low angle. Now there is movement in the camera as the camera. This song had more of a show, where there was dancing and it looks more cinematic

Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back/ Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965)
There is commentary at the start of the video. They start introducing lyrics to the music video although it only was a single medium shot where one boy has a bunch of lyrics that he shows. The music is more abstract and its more 'Bluesy'.

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever (1966)
There is now colour! There are lots of different angled shots, there is a lot of camera movement. It followed the art movements in the 60s.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (1970)
It is in colour, introduces zooming in  live performances. Crossfade effects where different shots overlap and the previous shot fades away. Consists of low angle, medium shots, long shots, close ups and over the shoulder shot. They introduced duplication effects .

Devo - Jacko Homo (1970)
More cinematic, introduces elctronic sound effects. Has medium, close, low angle shots.

David Bowe - Ashes to Ashes - (1980)
Develops the effects of zooming and crossfading. Introduces the 'Dutch Tilt' which shows the tilting angled shot. Also introduces the colour effects.

Spice Girls - Wanna Be (1996)
Introduces the arc shot and clearly has more choreography than all the previous music videos.

Lesson 1 - Music Video (14/09/2016)

What are the purpose of these videos?

Fuse - ODG featuring Tiffany
The purpose of the video was to promote the artist and to increase the range of media an artist is active in. By asking people to be able to take part in a video, it is promoting the artist because when people ask why do you need to record, the artist would say for a music video. Therefore it would instantly be promoting the artist and his/her music because the participants would tell their friends that they are in a music video and research the artist for themselves. This would give the artist views, more listeners, more subscribers and more followers.

Michael Jackson - Thriller
The purpose of the video is to promote the artist's album because Michael Jackson was already big through 'The Jackson 5' and by that time Michael Jackson already released 5 albums as 'Michael Jackson'. So with millions of fans he only needed to make a interesting but lengthy cinematic music video to keep the fans happy and listening to his latest album. This also helped him to practice his acting abilities, which clearly helped as he had a couple of movies he starred in (it helped him also promote his acting abilities).

Eminem - The Real Slim Shady
The purpose of the video is to promote the artist, and the album because he had already grabbed abit of attention by releasing 2 albums prior to  'The Marshall Mathers LP'. This music video  was the breaking point for Eminem because of the nickname 'Slim Shady'.

Justin Bieber's 'What do you mean?' promoted Justin Bieber as an artist. Prior to the album 'Purpose' Justin Bieber created albums that got a lot of good and bad attention. He promoted himself as an artist by showing the world that he has evolved as an artist. His aim was to produce good music so that he can get the best reaction from fans and even the critics.
Hi, my name is Sam Sanassee. I'm 17 years old and I'm retaking year 12 at Coulsdon college to study media, music tech and IT. I went to Archbishop Tenison's to study maths, DT and  I want to succeed as a sound technician by going to DeMontford university up in Leicester and studying music tech and performance, however I'd also like things to go well for me and my band! I love music and I love everything it stands for. I am part of a metalcore band, we don't really have a name yet. I started the band as a lead guitarist with my drummer Ryan. I then switched to lead vocals because my band mates thought I was a better screamer than guitarist.
